Part of the Sierra Club Wildlife Library, this handsome, large-size volume is spaciously designed with wide margins, thick paper, and quality reproductions. Grace, a zoologist, writes with authority and commitment, and the facts are exciting. He begins with the evolution of primates and their development of hands for grasping objects. Then he devotes a chapter each to the chimpanzee, the gorilla, and the orangutan, discussing each one's life cycle, habitat, bonding, and general behavior. He pays special tribute to the work of Dian Fossey with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, Jane Goodall with chimpanzees in Tanzania, and BiruteGaldikas with orangutans in Borneo. He ends with a plea to save these endangered great apes and the wild places where they live.
