The partnership of the publisher Field & Tuer, and the Newcastle [England] engraver Joseph Crawhall, produced some of the most striking illustrated books of the last half of the nineteenth century. The distinctive thick black lines of the woodcuts recall chapbook illustrations popular from the seventeenth until the earlier part of the nineteenth centuries; but Crawhall "made it new" in a way which distinguishes him as a positive and real contributor to graphic art. His children’s books have a strong sense of fun about them both in words and in illustrations. This 1978 Scolar Press edition is a facsimile reprint of Crawhall’s original work and features woodcut illustrations for each letter of the alphabet, plus a brief, one-page nod to the numbers 1 to 10.
