First produced on stage between 1612 and 1614, "Fuenteovejuna" remains the most popular and best-known play of Lope de Vega, considered to be among the greatest playwrights of Spain's Golden Age. Based on actual historical events, this play portrays the uprising of the villagers of Fuenteovejuna against the abuses of a powerful overlord. The turbulent and, at times, violent action of the drama has captivated theatergoers for almost four centuries. This edition of the play has been specially adapted and abridged for Spanish-language students at intermediate level and beyond. Numerous vocabulary and cultural notes clarify and illuminate the text. In addition, archaic language has been modernized and difficult constructions simplified.
