Gr. 6-9. To fully grasp many aspects of today's United States, it is necessary to learn about slavery's role in people's lives and the country's development. It is essential to know that for nearly two centuries, Americans bought enslaved Africans and kept them and their descendants in bondage in the thirteen colonies and the United States. Slavery lasted so long and controlled so many people's lives that it made a huge impact on American history. When enslaved African peoples were first brought to the New World, estranged from their homeland, they adapted their native rituals, religions, customs, language, and arts to their new home. In doing so, they held onto their rich heritage while introducing aspects of it to the Americas. "Life under Slavery" covers such topics as: Typical living conditions of enslaved Africans ~ The blending of different African ethnic groups ~ Some slaves' resistance to religious conversion and the development of new religions and cultural traditions ~ How Black Codes established codes of conduct and molded slave life ~ New family structures that evolved in response to families broken by slavery ~ Life in different sectors of the slave industry.
