From long-tusked walruses to poisonous cobras to web-spinning spiders, the critters in this narrow, colorful book are wild, weird, and wonderful. Three verses sit in boxes on the left-hand page, while on the right, behind flaps illustrated with one detail of the mystery animal, the answers and full pictures await unveiling by curious fingers. The rhymes are not as clever as the pictures, but the overall effect is pleasingly silly: I live up north,
but I don't say brrrr.
Cold can't get through
my thick white fur.
Who am I?
Lift the flap to see a polar bear with a slightly cross-eyed, friendly look, as he waves goofily at the reader. Very young kids will enjoy guessing the answers to the riddles, and learning their wild animals while they're at it. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter
