Everyone struggles with his or her conscience at times. Everyone knows what it feels like to have to do something they do not want to do, but that they know is right. Thomas More had a lifetime of struggles with his conscience. He thought he should be a monk, but he also wanted to marry. He went into public service with high ideals, but ended up serving King Henry VIII, a cruel and tyrannical man. For Thomas More, the final straw was the demand that he acknowledge the king's divorce and new marriage. He refused, and as a result he lost his property, his good name, and finally his head. Thomas More's victory came only after death. He is one of the great martyrs both for religious freedom and for English common law, which later became the basis for much of the legal system in the United States. Any time someone says, I decline to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate me, they are using an argument originally advanced by Thomas More.
