This set of five slipcase-bound books is first in a series of sets that introduce the fundamentals of reading to children from pre-school through grades K and 1. This set's short-vowel titles are the first five volumes in a comprehensive 18-volume series of basic readers, all of which use the phonics method. This five-book set teaches kids to recognize words in which the dominant vowel sound is a, e, i, o, or u, each book concentrating on a single vowel. All are Level 1 readers with amusing stories and eye-catching color illustrations. Each title also suggests an activity that encourages kids to interact with the book's subject matter. Follow-up material in each book includes a word list, summarizing all the words being taught, plus a letter to parents and teachers explaining the fundamental concepts underlying both the series and the specific title.

The Valu-Pak method of acquiring these readers for $15.96 per set gives the purchaser a savings of $3.99 as compared with purchases of the five books separately, which would cost $19.95.
