The anthology presents the arguments for and against bilingual education as an educational tool in helping school children that have limited proficiency in English, learn English early in school. Advocates assert that the knowledge of a first language (usually Spanish) helps children learn a second language (English). Opponents, mostly advocates of English as a national language, argue that English immersion is a better method. The debate has graduated into a fight between those who believe that English should be the only medium of instruction in schools and that multiple languages endanger American society, and those who argue that bilingualism and bilingual education are an asset and actually enrich, not threaten, American society.
