Rain May doesn't want to move to the country with her mother. She hopes their house won't sell. But it does - to a man in a pinstripe suit and a woman wearing bright lipstick. Rain finds herself renovating her grandmother's old house in the country and creating a new life with Maggie. This includes meeting Star Trek fan and highly intelligent eleven-year-old Captain Daniel from next door who has "maintained surveillance" on Rain's new house for years and is apprehensive about the arrival of new aliens. So begins a unique friendship that is tested against all odds as Rain finds strength to cope with her new life, her relationship with her now-absent father and his new partner, and as Daniel struggles to face school bullying and his often uncomfortable relationship with his own parents.
