It's the year 2287 and life on Earth has changed dramatically. For one thing, the human population has dwindled down to a handful. For another, technology has petered out completely, and people make their homes in makeshift tents and abandoned buildings. In this scared and lonely world, Jay has managed to survive solely by his wits, with only a pet chicken to keep him company. At least he always thought that was the case. But on the day that Jay decides to leave his home on the top floor of a burned-out apartment building, this chicken starts talking, and the things she says will change Jay's life forever.

Ethel the chicken, it turns out, is really an almost-all-powerful being from another galaxy, sent to Earth to make sure that humanity escapes extinction and that Earth is restored to her former glory. And she has picked Jay to help her do it.

As Ethel leads Jay through weird and dangerous new landscapes, they encounter some of the strangest and funniest characters of all time, including goldfish-oracles, evil roosters, giant potatoes, blind piano tuners, and Merlin.
