Crandalls with candles, Snuvs with gloves, Yops who hop, and other Seuss creations help teach the numbers 1 through 10 on these 30 flashcards (3.375 by 5.75 inches). On one side of a card is a numeral and black-and-white drawings demonstrating that number; on the other are color illustrations with the number and a description (for example, "four Yops who hop"). To drill using the cards, show the child the colored side, cover the number with a finger, and read the description; ask the child to count the objects in the drawing, then flip the card over and practice counting again. Speed up as you play rounds. You can also arrange the cards in rhyming sets to help reinforce the numbers and introduce simple addition through counting paired cards. For extra fun, make up counting songs or poems or ask your child to invent a card game. A card is included with a note to parents and teachers that suggests learning variations.
