William Ware, educated at Harvard, continued on at the college to study divinity with his father, Henry Ware, and served the Unitarian church in New York City. Never at home in the pulpit, he resigned to turn to editorial and literary pursuits, specializing in works of classical and oriental fiction. His novels Zenobia (1837) and Aurelian (1838) won him fame. The setting for Julian was the Holy Land in New Testament times. The novel purports to be a series of letters from Julian, a Jew, to his mother. Well known in Herods court, Julian was an observer of many of the events of Jesus life, but concluded that, remarkable as he was, he was not the Messiah.
