Scared, starving and in fear of losing their lives, millions of people flee from their homelands, each one becoming `another' refugee. Working in extreme conditions, bargaining with governments and countries at war, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the UNHCR, strives against the odds to provide international protection for refugees; fulfilling their immediate needs for shelter, food and water to keep them alive and safe, while working to achieve a long term solution to the plight of these people. In the face of a growing problem, heightened in Europe after World War 1, the then League of Nations took action. In 1921 the Arctic explorer, Fridtjot Nansen, was appointed first High Commissioner for Refugees. Originally set up as a temporary organization, UNRCR is still working today - facing an ever growing number of refugees - as mankind commits atrocities against one another.
