About Mary
I wrote my first book when I was seven years old. It was written on that ivory colored paper with the blue lines on which most of us learned to write our alphabet and our first words and sentences. It was illustrated with crayon drawings. Some of the poems were original, some were plagiarized--(a concept I learned at that tender age as my father penned in the names of the real authors). And ever since, I have wanted to "be a writer".
I have written children's stories--my favorite reading is good children's and YA literature. But I have always been 'too busy' to figure out how to find a publisher. I have written research papers which my professors urged me to seek publication for. Again, I was 'too busy'. I have developed and taught seminars and workshops for educators on Positive Behavior Management/Teaching from a Restorative Paradigm and listened to my students refer to my original handouts as "articles". Maybe it was that that got my attention, finally. That and a few more birthdays and my brother's challenge to me to not do as our father did and "take my stories to my grave", unshared.
And so "someday" is finally "today". Now. Here. I have taken a personal sabbatical from all my 'too busyness'. I am dusting off the stories from my files, polishing them until they shine. I'm having a blast listening to the ones that have been whispering at me from the corners of my cluttered mind and writing them down. I'm not having as much fun trying to figure out how to connect to an agent and/or a publisher. But, this time, I intend to find my way through the maze.
