WingSpan Press is a self-publishing services business based in California specializing in POD (print on demand) publishing and distribution. They offer layout, design, book production, printing and distribution. Books are listed with Ingram Book Group's distribution catalog and Books in Print and are listed on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com and most all online book sellers. Books are now also listed on all foreign Amazon sites, e.g. amazon.co.uk, amazon.fr, amazon.de, etc. They publish mostly under their own WingSpan Press imprint, as well as provide setup, print and production services for other small press publishers, including authors who have purchased their own ISBNs from Bowker. Their packages include ISBN assignment. Package prices are average to low compared to other self publishing companies. (Lowest cost package $499 as of 1/1/2008). All books are assigned Library of Congress numbers and submitted to LOC on publication. Their agreement is non-exclusive, meaning you can take your book elsewhere at any time. They have editorial and design services available at additional cost. Their website says that publication takes '6-8 weeks' from final manuscript submission to publication. Industry average is 6-12 weeks, with some companies taking up to 6-9 months. They offer softcover, hardcover and color printing. They were the first POD publisher to offer authors the opportunity to buy copies of their books at the production cost plus shipping vs. buying at a discount off the cover price as most POD publishers do. Their printing prices are considerably lower than those of the large companies like Author House etc. ranging from $3.50 - $7.00 per book on average. They do screen manuscripts, and say they won't accept hate, porn, illegal or very poorly edited material. Their royalty is generally 20% of the cover price of the book, with a very reasonable suggested retail pricing structure, which is something of a departure from the long-standing problem with POD publishing of pricing self-published books far above industry average. WingSpan Press uses Lightning Source (both US and UK) for most print and distribution, (as do almost all self publishing services companies which offer distribution and listing with major online stores).
