About Spelile
Spelile Rivas, author of the 2010-2011 Tejas Star Book Award, No Time for Monsters/No Hay Tiempo Para Monstruos, was born in Houston, Texas and raised in Denver, Colorado. At the age of 14, she was whisked away from the city, and dropped into Orange, Texas, where she lived in the same house her mother was born in. Living in a culture with one foot rooted in Texas, and the other foot firmly planted in Cajun Country, Spelile gained a unique perspective on life.
Spelile graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in English and became a teacher. Her greatest experience was studying playwrighting with her mentor, Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright, Charles Gordone. He said of her creative writing ability, “Spelile has professional promise.” Under his watchful eye, she gained an even deeper perspective on life.
Raised by a family that hammered in and prospered from, the benefits of an education, she decided to write inspirational stories for children, based on her teaching and mothering experience. Her most rewarding, and surprising, outcome of writing has been the acclaim received by her first book, No Time for Monsters. Released in April 2010, No Time was placed on the Tejas Star Book Award List. In February 2011, the students of Texas voted No Time for Monsters the 2010-2011 Tejas Star Book Award winner. In addition, she is an author on the Author Pronunciation Guide site of Teachingbooks.net and has had the pleasure of giving author presentations to children in the South, giving her an even more unique perspective on life.
Spelile currently stays at home taking care of her daughters and writing. She also travels to schools and libraries, in Texas and other states, conducting author presentations. The various perspectives that Spelile has gained have helped to make her stories inspirational, insightful, funny, creative, sometimes quirky, but always an experience. Spelile has something to offer all children!
Spelile lives in Arlington, Texas with her husband, and three beautiful daughters who are all instrumental in helping her to develop story ideas.
