About Laurie
I am a licensed child psychologist, certified school psychologist and registered play therapist, which basically means that I am totally devoted to learning about children and their issues. I spend my days as a staff psychologist in an elementary school on Long Island and my afternoons in my private practice with young children.
I also love to write and have developed a column called "Grin and Share it" (true anecdotal stories about children that made me smile) which appears in the quarterly newsletter of the NY Association of Play Therapy. Over the summer I was also hired to do editorial work on an American Girl book that is due out in 2009. Currently I'm under contract with John Wiley and Sons to write a textbook chapter on play therapy techniques for children with selective mutism. But- I'm particularly proud that my first book was just published last week by Loving Healing Press, the culmination of years of tweaking while I loaned it out to friends. It is called, "The "O MY" in tonsillectOMY and adenoidectOMY: how to prepare your child for surgery. (Thank you Victor Volkmann for having faith in it!) My latest manuscript is a children's book called, "Explain Anxiety to Me", a collaborative effort with one of my sons which explains the biological underpinnings of anxiety and how to make the symptoms go away. We'll be seeking a publisher for it soon.
Aside from the fun and productive professional activities that keep me busy, my truly favorite role is being a mother. My husband, sons and I enjoy each other's company, appreciate the value of family and look for opportunities to make each other laugh. When I'm happy, I'm creative. And when mama's happy, everyone is.
