Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Joseph E. Scalia moved to Long Island during the first gasoline shortage back in the 70s to be closer to work and remained there for 33 years trying to teach English and Creative Writing to reluctant teenagers. Always the writer, he started his career in elementary school scribbling what he calls "terrible rhyming poems on bathroom walls," and when he became a teacher, he continued "publishing" his verse in the faculty bathroom!

But over the years he made the transition to paper and eventually graduated to writing fiction. He has written and published two novels, FREAKs (Honorable Mention Writer´s Digest 9th Annual Book Competition and Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English "2002 Book of the Year") and Pearl (Finalist ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards). Along the way he has amassed and published numerous short stories. One volume, No Strings Attached, is an eclectic collection of his short stories that was published in 2003 by PublishAmerica. His latest book published in January 2008 by Tawny Girl Press is Brooklyn Family Scenes, a volume of stories, essays and poetry drawn from his family life. Scalia vs. The Universe Or: My Life And Hard Times, a collection of his off-beat humor was published by Tawny Girl Press in October 2020. In addition, Scalia has also managed to produce in print and on paper at least one very long unpublished volume of poetry, Poetry In Alphabetical Order!
