bububooks Seeks to Revolutionize Sense of Identity for Multicultural Children in America
CHICAGO, Ill. April 13, 2009 -- bububooks recently opened its online store to offer bilingual storybooks for multi-cultural children. Children often identify with the main characters in their storybooks. But even though 40 percent of American children were non-white in 2006, most of their storybook role models do not reflect the child’s own multicultural heritage.
bububooks believes children need to be aware of other cultures, as well as their own. Yet, many immigrant children struggle to bridge the differences between the American culture at school, and their native culture at home. With parents and teachers who are often just as unaware of the other’s culture, the child remains stuck between two worlds. bububooks aims to serve as that bridge.
bububooks (www.bububooks.com) began by offering Chinese/English children’s books, and the company will launch their Spanish/English section May 1.
Laura Renner, founder of bububooks, faced her own such cultural divide. She often recounts the story of watching television as a teenager one day where a mother was scolding her teenage son. As he looked down in shame, she said, “Look at me when I’m talking to you!” Unfamiliar with the mother’s demand, Laura looked her Korean mother straight in the eye the next time she was being scolded. Her mother, expecting Laura to look downward in respect, responded, “Don’t look at me when I’m talking to you!”
“Luckily, I was old enough to figure out the opposite reactions were two different ways to show respect between American and Korean cultures,” said Laura. “But imagine how confusing that must be for a 5-year-old to be told one thing by his teacher and another by his parents. I created bububooks to help children, parents and educators make this transition for the child much smoother.”
Laura also believes these multi-cultural bilingual books will help schools meet the growing demand of English Language Learners (ELL) programs.
