Phoenix Learning Resources
In 1973, Heinz Gelles and Barbara Bryant formed a company called Phoenix Films & Video, committed to producing quality educational films. This film collection is primarily comprised of enrichment films for libraries, universities, and special interest groups. After Phoenix Films became established, BFA Educational Media was purchased from CBS. This division is geared mainly toward the educational marketplace. A third division, Phoenix Learning Resources, was developed. It is the textbook publishing and distributing subsidiary whose publications concentrate on remedial reading, language arts, and arithmetic. In 1993, Phoenix moved its corporate headquarters from New York City to St. Louis, Missouri. In conjuntion with this relocation to St. Louis, all company divisions were organized as a division of The Phoenix Learning Group, Inc. In 1997, Phoenix acquired a fourth division, Coronet/MTI Films and its award-winning collection of educational videos, videodiscs, and multimedia programs from Simon & Schuster, the publishing operation of Viacom, Inc. Approximately 6,000 titles are now under the Company's ownership or control. Phoenix currently provides quality educational content for almost any technology now developed. These titles are available in a variety of formats, 16 mm, video, laser-disc, CD-ROM, and DVD. The high quality of the Phoenix film library has brought the Company hundreds of awards from both U.S. and international film and video festivals, including several Blue and Red Ribbon awards at the American Film Festival, Cine Golden Eagles, and an Academy Award for the best live-action short film production of the popular children's book, MOLLY'S PILGRIM. The Phoenix Learning Group serves a variety of customers and markets, domestically and worldwide, including: Television, Cable System and Network, Instructional Television, Networks, School Systems, Public Libraries, Business and Industry, and Other Specialized Markets. Each title receives a full market treatment, which has proven extremely successful in promoting the growth of each film. The company's in-house Promotion Department produces literature such as, posters, self-mailers, study guides, and other materials specifically for each title. The company has one of the largest sales forces that covers the United States to offer all of the Product lines to the educational and public library marketplaces. In addition, Phoenix has sales representatives specializing in government, military, and industrial clients, and a Television Sales Department, which primarily targets films and videos for cable and pay television channels, PBS stations, and instructional television markets (ITV's). Phoenix also employs approximately twenty-five foreign representatives, all over the world, to handle both the educational and television markets in their native countries. As a result of its growing overseas business, Phoenix actively produces foreign language tracks for many of its more popular titles, and imports and produces foreign language programming for both the domestic market and for export.
