Mondadori is Italy's biggest publisher and has confirmed its leadership in all market segments. The company's book production covers the entire range of cultural and literary interests thanks to a rich catalogue and prestigious series such as the Meridiani, Scrittori Italiani e Stranieri and Le Scie. In 2005, Oscar, Mondadori's paperback series, celebrated its 40th anniversary. In fact in 1965, Arnoldo Mondadori had the intuition to launch a low-priced paperback series distributed through newsstands. Since then, the Oscars have become a pillar of the company with a catalogue that includes over 3,500 titles. In the children's sector, Mondadori has recently made a number of important advances, publishing titles of great success, such as Cornelia Funke's Il principe dei ladri, Artemis Fowl L'incidente artico by Eoin Colfer and the 2004 Guinness Book of Records. In terms of hard cover editions, the sector that traditionally generates most bestsellers, 2004 was an exceptional year. From the Premio Strega awarded to Ugo Riccarelli for Il dolore perfetto, which sold more than 100,000 copies, to the reconfirmation of a great author such as Alberto Bevilacqua with his Tu che mi ascolti. As well as the excellent performance of historical authors from the Mondadori catalogue such as Ken Follett and Patricia Cornwell and the extraordinary success of Dan Brown's Il Codice da Vinci, which was published at Christmas 2003 and which, at more than a million copies, went on to become the best selling book of 2004, followed by the publication at Christmas 2004 of a special illustrated edition and of Angeli e demoni. Bruno Vespa continues to be a star performer in the non-fiction segment. Even though the real phenomenon of the year was the publication of the book by the late Pope John Paul II, Alzatevi, andiamo!, for which Mondadori managed world publication rights.
