tellmemore said: I had a blast writing this book and the other 5 in the series! The idea of writing these books came from my personal experiences working and writing about science. (Yes, I was a scientist like those described in these books before I switched to writing for kids) So, every week I check many sicence journals and see what scientists have been up to recently. I selected recent works that I found especially appealing to kids (and to me) and wrote story-like chapters of how the scientists were hooked into doing the experiments to answer questions such as, why do lions have manes? Or, how do seals succesfully hunt in muddy waters where they cannot see their prey? Or, what? Not all babies sleep all day? It turns out dolphin and killer whale babies do not sleep at all (and their moms neither) the first month after birth. So, what happened to all that doctor-talk about needing a lot of sleep to grow up well? There was a mystery there, a secret, I had to write about!
