But this all changes when Estella falls for Catalina's intended at the same time that secret Jewish families are being denounced and tortured and burned at the stake. Estella doesn't realize her family fall into this category at first, but by the time she does, it is too late - the majority of her family are in jail and she is in terrible danger. Rather gruesome scenes towards the end of the novel.
