Even as an adult – I learned a lot from this book, particularly that the Great Depression in the 1930s and men needing work was a huge influence on ending child slavery. It’s really hard to imagine a world like the one Emily lived in. We so easily take advantage of the laws and community services we have today. I think this would be a wonderful book to introduce to a child because it could educate them on the early 1900s. Ending the book by stating that child slaverystill exists in other parts of the world is also motivational. If a child feels strongly for Emily and what she endured, the child might feel compelled to do something about the children in 3rd world countries.
