The later philosopher Alfred North Whitehead famously remarked that all of western philosophy is only footnotes to Plato - and he was right. Republic is his best known and least understood work. It is important to keep in mind when one reads it that they are actually talking about the state of one's soul - not an actual city with an actual government. Excellent work with many brilliant passages.
