This book could be used as a lead-in for racial segregation or the Civil Rights Movements. Children can relate to the characters in the story, which provides a useful classroom book. Clover is on the African American side of the fence and Annie is on the white side. Both girls were told not to cross onto the other side of the fence. Clover and Annie decide that sitting on top of the fence is not against the rules, and soon form a friendship. The need for the fence escapes the girls as they hope for its removal in the near future. I enjoyed this book and its perspective. Other characters in the story learn from Clover and Annies behavior and adapt their own as well. If only the rest of the world could follow their example so easily!
