Historian said: I find this book to be very interesting in its approach. As a Christian who loves tales of Christian missionaires in far away places, this book peaked my interest. I knew this was not written from a Christain prespective but more as a story of the people and not the cause. You get a glimpse of a dysfunctional family who just happen to be missionaries, then place them in the Congo of all places and now you have a story. The book is told from the perspective of a mother and four daugthers. Although every chapter shifts who is telling the story, the flow is not disrupted. Although I would never recommend this book as a tale of missionaries, I would recommend it as a deep look into the psychology of women under the thumb of a domineering man who thinks no more of women than his socks. The downside is that that book is a bit depressing and that causes me to read it at a slow rate because I need to be in the mood for it...but that's just me.
