"A Hole Is To Dig" strikes me in the freedom it gives children to choose how they manipulate objects, ideas, and the outside world. A hole does not have one purpose, but many. While the book might have been originally formatted as a vocabulary enhancer the deeper meaning of the book lies in building individual children with creative minds.
