Does Gloria live in Lake Forest, or on Astor Street in Chicago, or on Astor St IN Lake Forest? Because at 1920's driving time, those places are easily 2 hours away from each other (as would be Lake Forest and the Green Mill). Even today you're looking at an hour on a highway at 55mph. A cab ride from Lake Forest to the Green Mill? How rich are these people?
And confusing me further, in Ch 12 when Lorraine follows Gloria, she leaves Lake Forest, goes through the North Shore, gets on North Broadway, passes the Wrigley Building, the Drake Hotel and winds up at the Green Mill. That's some pretty good driving-in-circles!! I'm sure this won't bother anyone who isn't from Chicago, but hey, if you're going to use real Chicago landmarks -- use them right! These places all still exist and deserve to be described accurately.
Still, that's the only flaw in an otherwise refreshing, fascinating new YA title. I loved these characters and look forward to the next title -- just get someone from the Windy City to copyedit, please!! tags: I read |
