The characters exhibit their animal behaviors, but they can talk to each other and different animals. The chicken is an easily recognizable animal, and small children will be able to catch on to the twist in the story. Commentary on Art: Lionni used a few mediums to create An collage, graphite, and colored pencil. The illustrations are full of texture from the use of different types of mediums. The mother alligator appears rough and rugged in her skin. He mixes warm and cool colors from the water, flowers, rocks, and animals. The moon is carved out of the night sky rather than drawn into. The white negative space focuses attention on the color and action. The wide eyes of the animals emphasize their youth and innocence in their play.
