They were unhappy with their life, and a mysterious bird makes them an offer they cannot refuse. Soon they realize that this paradise comes with a price, and they return home more grateful than ever for their little apartment. The theme is explicit, stated at the end of the book, but it does allow for further discussion. The illustrations appear on either side of the pages, and sometimes the picture extends past the border, which adds to the effect of the small apartment. The apartment is dreary and gloomy with a cracked ceiling and tile, but splashes of color are added after Al learns to make the best of what he has. The fantasy land extends out the border which emphasizes it’s large and dimensional.
