The wave has emotions, moods, and they change quickly. The wave is developed through anthropomorphism and at times has arms, stands, and is referred to as she (probably due to her constantly changing emotions). The book leaves you wondering what kinds of playmates are next for the little boy. The illustrator used acrylic and oil paints for this book. There are combinations of one and two page spreads in full color. The shapes the wave takes on are playful and rowdy-like: smothering the dad, dancing around the house, shooting up like a mushroom cloud. Sometimes the boy looks outright terrified by the tossing of the wave. The settings are realistic, and one can almost feel the muddy slop left behind from the wave. The sun warm glow is sneaking out the window while the night is illuminated out the other window. The illustrator uses all kinds of colors in the water for different light effects.
