I was looking for cultural differences when reading this and the one I noticed is that he starts school at age 6. This book has unusual illustrations. It deals with fairly complex fears as Garmann, who is afraid of starting school, asks adults he loves what they are afraid of: abandonment, death, performing. The part of the book I love is on the page where his elderly aunts are going home. "The aunts are leaving. They have all the time in the world, but no time to lose." When I read a book like this, I ask myself, who would I suggest this book to? This book might be a good choice for those who read to senior citizens, although the one aunt clearly discusses her fear of death in a positive light. It might be a good choice for a high school student in a psychology class. It also might be a good choice for a high school student who needs to read a book translated from another language and does not want a lengthy piece. I would be interested in hearing others views on this work.
