The text is uncomplicated, with one to two words on each page. Upon viewing this book, it becomes quite clear why this book was given the 2008 Caldecott Honor award. Readers will witness a chicken turn into an egg, and a tadpole turn into a frog. There is a die cut punched out of every other page and when it’s turned, the colors from the previous page turn it into something different. Each illustration has a rich, vibrant colored background created with thick paint, giving a textured look. Towards the end of the book, Seeger moves on from nature to accomplishments that people can achieve. “First the Word, then the Story.” This beautifully crafted book could be a fascinating story read one-on-one or during a group story time.
