The writing is superb; the author uses such detailed, flowing words that it could be poetry. The story is based off a classic folktale about brothers who are turned into swans by a sorceress, but the author expands the story by letting you into the world of the protagonist (the sister of the brothers, Sorcha). The following two books continue the story by describing the lives of first Sorcha's daughter, Liaden, and then Liaden's niece, Fainne.
