CHARLENE is an Eastern Kentucky coalminer's daughter who vows not to drink like her father, swears she will not be stuck in a tumultuous marriage but finds herself in the situations she vowed would never happen. Charlene falls in love with at a very early age with the mine foreman's wild, irresponsible, yet incredibly handsome son, discovers she is pregnant at seventeen, and she learns about life through extreme sorrow. BUDDY has another girl, leaving Charlene to have the baby on her own. When the baby is a few days old, both sets of parents encourage a wedding and Charlene becomes a bride at seventeen. The colorful local characters of Birdie and Big Edgel add tons of hillbilly flavor and humor to the mix of characters. Through Birdie, themes emerge, that life is not fair, so deal with it anyway, that humor makes any situation bearable, and that little things are what are important, sunsets, hot cups of coffee, clean sheets, or the refreshing smell of a baby whose chubby arms hug one's neck.
