The Abbot Rutilius is a medieval auditor good with accounts and at figuring ways to eat well but not much else, he takes a young teenager as his apprentice(run about) thinking to teach him everything on the job as it were but finds the young man just as astute as himself and quite capable of teaching the Abbot a thing or two. Together they investigate a double murder as well as theft and many other misdemeanours.
