Slayton said: As a child, this book took me to places and times I'd not yet heard about. It squeezed my heart with an awful, beautiful power. The emotion has never left me. Not just about injustice, but also about what it means to wait, what it means to long for something, what the concept of "forever" really is. As an adult, this book left me shaking, sobbing with intensity of emotion. Sounder was formative for me. Still is.
