Franny in this story has just the right amount of verve, tempered by a lot of empathy for her friends as well as for the hoods and outcasts. In turnabout from the more usual plots, a young white boy moves from the other side of the highway to her neighborhood, and attends her all-black school. The new 'Jesus Boy' has a rough time of it, giving a nice line of tension through the story, and the resolution, where Franny and the boy become friends, is very satisfying.
