About Debby
My first picture book, A Sack Full of Feathers, was published by Orca in 2006. My other books are WOW: World’s Outstanding Women Athletes (Sports Illustrated for Kids Books, 1998) and Your Child's Hearing Loss: What Parents Need to Know, co-written with Dr. Jackson Roush (Perigee 2005)
I consider myself a jack-of-all trades writer. My articles and reviews have appeared in a variety of publications including People, Parents, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Publishers Weekly, Glamour, American Baby, Chatelaine, and The Washington Post. I also write a bi-weekly family/humor column for my local paper, the Edmonton Journal in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
I am married and have two children. My daughter, who was born in 1996, inspired me to write "Your Child's Hearing Loss," because after she was diagnosed with a hearing loss shortly after her third birthday, I couldn't find any books that would give me a sense of what to expect as she grew up. My son, who is two years younger, has normal hearing.
I have a journalism degree from Syracuse University and an MFA in creative writing from Cornell University. I've taught journalism, composition, creative writing, and magazine writing at Cornell University, Ithaca College, St. Lawrence University, and Grant MacEwan Community College. I also teach Judaism, ethics, and music at my synagogue Hebrew school.
When I'm not teaching or working on one of my many writing projects, I love to read, cycle, and bake (sometimes at the same time!). The rest of my time is taken up with laundry, grocery shopping, tending to guinea pigs, attempting to make nutritionally balanced meals for my family, and ferrying my children to music lessons and sports activities.
