I'm based in the UK and initially trained as a research scientist; I have a BSc in biochemistry and a PhD in molecular genetics. However, I found lecturing much more rewarding than than lab work and so moved into teaching. My first 'textbook' (slightly oddly, for a biochemist) was a physics book because I didn't like any of the physics textbooks on the market at the time. It was a photocopied effort that was only ever designed for internal school use but ended up getting the attention of a publisher at, what was them, Addison Wesley Longman.

I have now written for most of the major UK publishers (Pearson - including Edexcel, Heinemann & Longman), Nelson Thornes, Hodder Education and Collins Education. I have also acted as series editor on a number of publications, including 4 editions of Exploring Science for 11-14 year olds in the UK market.

I've also has made occasional appearances on television as a life science presenter and have done a fair bit of voice-over work. Hobbies include travel, skiing, photography and classical music.
