St. Louis native and Philadelphia-based visual artist and illustrator David Butler has situated himself within the figurative and portrait painting tradition. He attained his BFA at the Columbus College of Art and Design, and is inspired by the figurative works of traditional painters--including Da Vinci, Holbien, Michelangelo, Dali, and others. Butler's work engages the visual essence of urban culture, placing figures in environments and narratives inspired by elements of hip hop, Black culture, and his life experience. His recent focus is reinterpreting Popular Culture visually, and using the figure to present fresh narritves on modern culture.

Along with his visual arts background, Butler has maintained a career as an illustrator and mural painter doing work for clients such as Price Waterhouse Cooper, Ithaca College, Proctor and Gamble, and Miami University Oxford, Ohio. He has illustrated three children’s books, and completed spot illustrations for multiple editorial publications.

David currently works as an educator and is continuing his studies at The University of the Arts, for a MFA in Studio Art. He currently resides in Philadelphia with his wife Erica, and dog Copper.
