sara! you are responsible for one of the happiest moments of my life last year - and i finally have a chance to thank you!
you reviewed my book for cbc radio, but i didn't know about it until someone in montreal called my dad and said "hey i think cbc radio just said something about your daughter's book, but i didn't really catch it - i was in a taxi and only caught the tail end of it."
i was frantic. but my sister-in-law figured out that it must have aired on freestyle, and that i could hear the broadcast again over the internet that evening when it aired in vancouver. picture me, hunched in front of my computer on the third floor, racing downstairs to answer the door or separate fighting children or pull the ashes of our neglected supper from the oven, then back upstairs to listen again... when the show began i scribbled as quickly as i could but you'd never know i had ever worked as a reporter because as soon as i heard your voice my hand was shaking and there was this odd buzzing in my ears because you were so kind, really truly kind, and you kept on being kind, and i was waiting for the inevitable "but", the entirely justifiable pointing out of first-novel flaws, but there was nothing, just kindness!
later, when i realized you were also the author of When You Were Small, i couldn't believe it. i've recommended your book to so many people!
i always hoped that if i had a chance to meet you, even electronically, i would be sensible and not gush.
what a vain hope.
