In Brothers author Julian Thompson (of The Grounding of Group 6) offers a suspenseful and tender story with an unusual perspective on mental illness. Chris Craven, 17, never thought his brother was crazy, and is stunned to discover that his mother sent Cam to a mental hospital after some disturbing episodes at college. Chris admires and loves his charismatic older brother, so when he finds out Cam has escaped from the institution, he heads west with a mysterious girl named Michelle and her younger sister Millie who claim to know where Cam is. As they travel, Chris begins to realize that Michelle also is mentally ill, and Millie has come along to watch out for her. Due to their similar sibling concerns and their mutual pondering about what is mentally "normal," Chris and Millie begin to form a powerful bond. On a ranch in Montana they finally find Cam, happily living with a group of militant survivalists, oblivious to their racism and antigovernment paranoia. Just when Chris discovers a secret cache of guns, the sheriff's men and FBI deputies surround the compound, and the outlaws take the four young people hostage. To pull off an escape, Chris must summon all his wit and will power. In the process he learns that even though he's always been the baby of the family, he is capable of being a responsible leader.
