"FOR KIDS EVERYWHERE WHOSE DIFFERENCES MAKE THEM SHINE!"
Hi there and thanks for visiting my JacketFlap page.
My passion is advocating for children with hearing loss through my children's book "Let's Hear It For Almigal".
I ventured into this huge learning curve about 3 years ago and I released the book in May, 2012. (May is Better Speech And Hearing Month.).
I was determined to give children with hearing loss an engaging and adorable (hard bound) book featuring characters wearing hearing aids and cochlear implants. I also hoped that Almigal and her friends could educate and sensitize children about our "differences".
Diversity and inclusion are important themes in elementary education today. Teachers and reviewers often comment that Almigal has a universal message for all children about embracing our differences...but what makes this message unique is that it's told in the voice of a spunky little girl wearing cotton-candy pink hearing aids who's determined to hear "every single sound in the whole entire universe".
I know Almigal's story well. Thirty five years ago, doctors diagnosed my daughter Ali at ten months of age with a "profound hearing loss" and predicted she would never speak. Boy did those docs underestimate this mother-daughter team! I beam with pride as I share with you that Ali has beautiful speech and communication skills, a Masters degree in Social Work and works with clients that are both hearing and deaf. ( She is also fluent in sign language.)
I'm also proud to share that we have already received two awards (Mom's Choice GOLD and Florida Publisher's Association) and that I formed a publishing company (Handfinger Press) to publish my book (because I'm too much of a control freak to do it any other way).
I was so blessed to find many experts along the way that were thrilled to join this team, but as Almigal says, "the most excellent news of all" was that Tammie Lyon agreed to illustrate "Let's Hear It For Almigal. The illustrations are spectacular and I am in awe of Tammie's talent.
Almigal gives back! 5% of each book sold is donated to organizations that support deaf children and their families.
Thank you again for visiting!
