Super Maxwell and the Last Heroes is Tony Kerr's first novel, and follows the adventures of Maxwell Jones and Billy Barker, who find that their island home is a doorway to 101 Worlds - but on the planet Vir something comes back with them. Virporta Island is suddenly flooded with thousands of new residents - boys and girls who were born on the island have returned with their parents for a mysterious test. The test coincides with Maxwell Jones discovering that he can talk to animals - from ants, to seagulls, to his rather stuck-up light opera-loving goldfish. Maxwell immediately strikes up a friendship with one of the island's newest residents, Billy Barker, and together they set out to investigate. Maxwell and Billy discover that Virporta Island is a doorway which exists between our world and Vir, a once beautiful planet of superhumans, which is now a frozen, blasted wasteland. On Vir they discover the fate of the Last Heroes - and come face to face with Titus Mamble, who intends nothing less than to become a god ... all that stands in his way is Maxwell, Billy - and a rather obnoxious super intelligent chimpanzee.
