Graphic designer, illustrator and writer in the Boston area.
I am working on a bestiary of creatures native to Monster Island. Years ago I illustrated a few childrens' books and computer manuals. I am still trying to forget. The drawings are cute. Awfully cute. It's embarrassing. The world does not need more Cute. Plato's concept of absolute forms does not include "cute". This is no accident. The other absolute forms gave it das boot. It could be that the afterworld is all a'hopping with pastel unicorn ponies and mischievous pink cherubs tickling each other with buttercups like that gooey part of Fantasia. Beethoven's sixth symphony. Defaced, smeared with maple syrup and cotton candy. It goes without saying that Ludwig would not be pleased.
Where was I?
As bad as my illustrations were, and they were extremely bad, the writing was worse. Example: one book "Dinosaur Show and Tell' concluded with the stegosaurus kid (I made him canary yellow and gave him glasses with thick lenses - a dweeb) presenting his class of fellow giant reptiles with his pet: A Caveman! Ta-Dahh!
There is not one kid who will not respond to this with: "Dinosaurs and cavemen never met." Most boys I know would add: "Stupid."
So I decided to write my own book with monsters and pirates and cool stuff like that.
