About Allison
I have finished an historical, time travel fantasy book on Sitting Bull for ages 4-8. I am looking for a publisher. My children say it is funnier than Mary Pope Osborne. They like it when there are funny noises and people fall down....
I am going to send it to a couple of Independent Publishers who still accept by snail mail. Who knows, I might get lucky
I am currently working on a fantasy called, Augusta and the Mage's Cauldron for the YA market. I have three chapters. The weird thing is that there is a gap in time and my librarian friend, who read it for me said "You need three more chapters here, before she turns eleven."
That was weird for me, because I was thinking about it, but I wasn't sure if I should. I guess I should.
I just wrote a picture book called "Cinderella's Rishta" (which is Urdu for relationship.) It is a new version, explaining Cinderella's difficulties without the use of magic.
I want to finish another story called "Effie's Dream" which is a humorous tail about a cat who wants to become something "better." She finds a witch who will change her into anything she wants. And of course, eventually what she wants most of all is to go home! If anyone knows of a picture book publisher who would be interested in this whimsical tale, please speak up!
I am lucky enough to have an agent. She is very helpful. It was agonizing waiting for feedback this year--more painful than I could have guessed. I think I drove my husband mad into the bargain. She also recommended alternatives that were helpful to me. I don't know if all agents are this nice, but I am very happy with my agency--New York Literary Agency.
When I first started writing in Canada, one editor told me that I shouldn't be writing about dragons, but I should focus on character. Ten years later, I found out that she was right...
I taught English and ESL for years, but I think getting married and having children has made me realize what makes really good writing--all those things that worry you to death as a parent.
I feel lucky to be married, since I married late in life. And I feel even luckier to have three beautiful children--one girl and two boys.
We live in Georgia where houses are still affordable. I planted blueberry bushes and the kids go out and stuff their faces daily. And yes, you guessed it, it's another one of those...I feel lucky things.
The southerners have a lovely expression. They always say, "I feel blessed" and when you call them on the phone the message will say "Have a blessed day!" Aside from sweet tea, that's my favorite southern thing.
I think that everyone in the world should write a novel. I think the world would be a better place if everyone focussed on self-analysis and self-improvement. It might be full of books, but what a wondrous selection there would be, don't you think?
