As a teacher, I thought you might want to know about the debut (last Monday) of The Picnic Basket where school and library professionals taste new and forthcoming children's books with first-come, first-serve sample copies of books for kids of all ages. We send free books. You tell us what you think: look to see what’s in the weekly feast, request the books that you want to taste, read the books, and then post reviews on The Picnic Basket for your colleagues to read.

It’s a blog full of all you can read (and write) about children’s literature and I hope will become an additional resource for teachers. So far, the feedback’s been overwhelmingly positive. I hope you’ll take a peek and partake in the picnic.

#1 piece of advice is don't give up. 95% of success in any endeavor is just showing up. #2 yes I use an agent and I think they are essential. Go to literarymarketplace.com and look for agents that represent the kinds of books you want to write. #3 is publishers and editors are always going to respond to market forces. If their customers tell them there are too many bedtimes stories they are not going to buy a bedtime story unless it really knocks their socks off. So maybe you need to put that in a drawer for a while and write something else. When your new story is published and it's hugely successful then your publisher will want everything you've ever written including grocery lists and middle school report cards.

So keep at it and don't give up.
