Syrah, teachers crave for good books about the environment for elementary school aged children. And I have personally done alot of work with children that age. I find them VERY tuned in to doing the right thing with regard to animals...I used to bring orphaned wildlife to the schools to show them closeup what these gorgeous babies look like and feel like - fawns, squirrels, opposums, raccoons, wild rabbits, birds of all kinds, groundhogs. They would rush home and tell their parents not to take down trees in their yard from January through March because babies were being born and raised in the those trees. And they were vehement about it! ;-) Kids just need direction. They have lots of passion that should be focused on the Earth and its wild inhabitants. And away from the focus on meeting human needs above all else.

In my Historic Triangle book I focused, not ONLY on the history of the region, but the nature history as well. How many history books do that?? It's always about people, rarely if ever about the impact those same humans have had in settling a new land. The situation with the American Indian is a case in point. They were not treated well and neither was the land they inhabitated. If you ever get a chance to see the Hollywood production "JAMESTOWN" or even the newer POCAHONTAS story - those books are very biased and distorted and they tell a story that only Hollywood would tell. Pocahontas, for example, was a 12 year old Indian girl who was repeated raped and used by early American colonists, she was not a savior of anyone...she was a victim. I always take the time to tell kids about this when I am visiting schools to talk about my WILLI book. They are appalled, as they should be.

With my space book I plan to talk to them about the philosophy of space travel; should we as humans 'conquor' yet another domain like we have 'conquored' Earth?...or should we venture into SPACE to get a better perspective about ourselves and our presence on Earth. Those humans who have gone into Space come back changed as humans. They are more introspective, more sensitive to the obvious lack of real boundaries between people, only contrived ones. They implode with philosophical earthquakes, which is also as it should be.

Perspective offers us one of the most valuable learning experiences there is. Space as a new frontier doesn't have to be about war and conquoring anybody. It can be about self-growth and cultural enrichment and international peace, that is if the politicians don't dictate for us first.

Parents aren't doing the job as nature educator in general, so someone must, eh? The sky's the limit! :-)
